Don’t lose your General Election vote

With the countdown to the June 8 Parliamentary General Elections now on, residents are being reminded that they must be registered on the electoral roll if they wish to cast their vote in these elections.

If you are registered to vote  you will soon  be receiving a polling card through the door which will tell you whether you have  a postal or a proxy vote in place, or which polling station you must visit to cast your vote.

If you have not received your polling card by next week  this may mean you are not on the electoral register. One of the most common reasons for falling off the electoral register is if you have moved house or recently moved into Northumberland.

If you have only very recently registered to vote and received a confirmation letter from Northumberland County Council, you will receive a polling card at a later date. There is no need to re-register.

Residents have until the statutory deadline of May 22  to register.

Emma Hartley, Head of Campaigns at the Electoral Commission said:

“Our research shows that young people, students and recent home movers are less likely to be registered to vote. So if you have moved house recently, then make sure you’re registered correctly. If you’re not registered, you won’t be able to have your say on issues that directly affect your day-to-day life in Northumberland.”
