Extensive Urban Survey

The Northumberland Extensive Urban Survey is a
study of 20 historic towns in the county. It is part of a national
survey to help local authorities, English Heritage and others to
care for the fabric of our towns and cities in the future and to
ensure that archaeological information is available early in the
development process.
The survey reports have been compiled over a
number of years and will continue to be reviewed to reflect recent
discoveries, fieldwork and research, current local plans, and
planning guidance. We would also welcome your feedback or
suggestions.
The project involved three stages of work:
database, assessment and strategy:
The database stage involved
gathering information from a variety of sources and adding it to
the Historic Environment Record. Sources include archaeological
excavations and other discoveries; information about historic
buildings; historic maps; historic documents; and published
literature.
The assessment stage involved
writing a summary report on the history, archaeology and historic
topography of the town in question. The report is illustrated with
maps, and contains details of the sources on which the report is
based.
The strategy stage involved
developing local authority policies for protecting and managing the
archaeological and historic interest of each town.
Reports are available for consultation
through the Northumberland
Historic Environment Record and are downloadable in high and
low resolution PDF format. There are currently 18
