Fourteen of the Best: Northumberland’s Parks Win National Green Flag Awards
15 Jul 2025
Northumberland is celebrating a record-breaking achievement with 14 of its parks being awarded the prestigious Green Flag Award – the highest number the county has ever received.
The internationally recognised award, presented by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, honours parks and green spaces that meet the highest standards of environmental management, maintenance, and community involvement.
This year, Tyne Riverside Country Park has been awarded Green Flag status for the first time, bringing the county’s total to 14 and marking another step forward in Northumberland County Council’s ongoing ambition to expand the number of award-winning parks.
This success directly supports the commitments laid out in the council’s Environment Policy Statement and Action Plan, which sets out clear goals to enhance the quality, accessibility, and biodiversity of Northumberland’s green spaces, ensuring they are protected and improved for future generations.

Councillor John Riddle, Cabinet Member for Environment and Rural said:

“Our ambition is to see even more of our green spaces reach Green Flag standard. These parks are vital for the health and wellbeing of our communities, for biodiversity, and for creating places everyone can enjoy.”
