New extra care facility planned for Blyth

Plans for a flagship new extra care facility in Blyth town centre are to be discussed by councillors.

Cabinet are being recommended to approve up to £10.83m funding towards a brand-new centre for older people and others with support needs at Delaval Terrace near the town centre. The plans are to build self-contained accommodation for 61 people, providing their own bedroom, bathroom and living space, with communal space to socialise and outdoor space, all benefiting from 24/7 care.

Proposals are also being developed for a cafe/restaurant, hairdresser, a therapy room and space for external organisations.  It's designed to promote independence, provide opportunities for residents to develop social support and reduce isolation. Extra care schemes can also be used as a hub for other services that can be delivered to the local community.

The project is part of the £95m Energising Blyth Programme to improve the town and is funded by UK Government and the County Council.

The scheme is being developed and will be subject to further  design development, procurement, consultation and planning application prior to the scheme beginning construction in 2027.  The site of the new facility on Delaval Terrace has a number of derelict and vacant maisonettes on it currently which will be carefully demolished in early 2026.

More information about the demolition process will be shared well in advance of any works getting underway with local neighbouring businesses and residents.

Cabinet Member for Regeneration Councillor Richard Wearmouth explained: “It’s one of a number of projects that focus on delivering good quality homes at priority sites in Blyth town centre, with this flagship new development right next to the Community Hospital with easy access to services.

“This is extremely important to us as we are fully committed to the development of extra care accommodation for older people and others with support needs.  It will also help the council deliver care services more efficiently in the context of demographic changes that are likely to increase the demand for social care. “

Councillor Eve Chicken, Cabinet Member for Adults’ Services and Health said: "I'm delighted to see the Extra Care facility proposals being developed for this site. The programme we have planned for Northumberland will offer older people additional choices to live in high quality, accessible accommodation with care services on site. The Extra care scheme will be an important facility for Blyth."

Councillor Mark Peart, County Councillor for Croft Ward added: “It’s excellent to see planned investment in these services in the heart of Croft Ward alongside the existing Hospital.

“It’s an exciting time for the town centre as it is regenerated to now see health and extra care services being invested in at the heart of our community is a fantastic boost.”

Alan Ferguson, Chair of Blyth Neighbourhood Board and Owner of Fergusons Transport, said: “The Energising Blyth Programme is delivering real and positive change across the town centre with new facilities that revitalise the town such as the new Energy Central Learning Hub and recently opened Market Pavilion and Market Place.

“This project is a major step forward for the programme as it is now moving into a new phase with this investment in health and extra care facilities right in the heart of the community.”

Energising Blyth aims to deliver a fresh and compelling town centre offer, with new cultural and education facilities, improved connection between key areas of Blyth, revitalised public realm, enhanced green spaces, and new cycling and walking routes.

The provision of good quality residential property will play a vital role in this town centre regeneration, helping to drive local demand for leisure, retail and other services.
