Major step forward for Ashington cinema plans
28 Aug 2025
A major step forward in the Council’s £36m transformation of Ashington town centre is set to be agreed.
The Council’s Cabinet is being recommended to approve the Outline Business Case for Portland Park cinema - one of the final hurdles before construction is set to get underway in early 2026.
Five cinema screens, a family-orientated competitive socialising space and two restaurant units will provide a major boost adding to previous investment in the retail and leisure offer in this part of town.
The project, which is led by Advance Northumberland, is being funded by UK Government (MHCLG), NCC and Advance Northumberland.
Planning approval was granted earlier this year for the project and the preferred operator, REEL Cinemas have restated their commitment to operating a new cinema in Ashington.
The construction contract has been procured, and Advance Northumberland will be working with contractor Robertson Construction Group to build the cinema complex.
The cinema project is one of a number of improvements in the town. Work to improve the rear of Lintonville Terrace, Woodhorn Road and the vacant plot on Portland Park to make it a more welcoming, safe and accessible part of town will be complete by the end of August.
The works in this area include additional street lighting, road surfacing and paving and a new path and grassed area on the vacant development site. The vacant plot on Portland Park will open in late summer as a new green space with the site continuing to be marketed for longer term commercial use.
Councillor Richard Wearmouth, Cabinet Member for Business, Growth and Regeneration, said: “Subject to Cabinet approval next week, this is another major milestone in the regeneration of Ashington.
“The town is seeing a raft of improvements, from a new rail station and passenger rail line, a new college and the creation of this cinema and retail offer.
“It’s great to see confidence continue to build in the town and we're looking forward to Portland Park cinema and restaurants construction getting underway in the near future.
Steven Harrison, CEO of Advance Northumberland, said: “This project is a cornerstone of the regeneration strategy for Ashington.
“It brings not just a cinema, but a wider leisure destination that we’re confident will become a real hub of activity and enjoyment for local residents and visitors alike. We’re proud to be leading on this transformation and look forward to getting spades in the ground in the near future.”
Ashington Central County Councillor Caroline Ball added: “It’s very positive to see that the Portland Park plans are set for the go-ahead and I’m sure local people will welcome progress on this site and further sites around the town.”
John Johnston, Ashington Town Forum Chair added: “It's great to see these latest major milestones being achieved and change happening on the ground.
“Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to help develop these exciting plans and for local people’s support while the work is happening.”
