Budget approved by council
20 Feb 2025
A multi-million-pound budget for the coming year has been approved at Full Council.
The approved budget and Medium-Term Financial Plan (MTFP) will help deliver on the three priorities outlined in the Corporate Plan 2023- 26: Achieving Value for Money; Tackling Inequalities and Driving Economic Growth.
The budget for 2025-2026 outlines the Council’s commitment to Northumberland’s communities, through its £314 million capital programme which will see continued investment in schools, affordable housing, leisure facilities and town centre regeneration.
A Council Tax increase of 2.99% was agreed, along with a social care precept rise of 2% - in line with some 85% of councils in England. Savings of £16,299 million for the year ahead were also agreed.
The 2025-2026 budget is the result of several months of planning, consultation and scrutiny.
Announcing the Budget, Council Leader Glen Sanderson said: “I’m proud of this budget. We’ve protected the services and issues that people tell us matter the most – from free carparking in our towns, better roads, continued investment in public toilets and regeneration schemes across the county.
“We’ve a raft of new schools in the pipeline and hugely important schemes such as the Northumberland Line to complete, alongside the planned new data centre which is one of the biggest investments in Europe.
“Of course all this wouldn’t be possible without our staff who work every day to provide first class services and I want to pay tribute to the commitment and excellence they bring to our county year in year out.”
