A truly unique celebration rooted in the history and heritage of Berwick has been captured for future generations by Northumberland Archives.
Choosing the ‘Tweed Salmon Queen’ is a tradition dating back to the early 20th century and marks the town’s status as a significant fishing port and the importance of salmon fishing to the local economy and culture.
Each year the selected queen takes part in various ceremonial duties, including leading parades and attending community events to symbolise and celebrate the spirit of Berwick.
One of the most valuable aspects of the Tweed Salmon Queen tradition is the collection of archive photos that capture the evolution of the event over the decades.
Councillor Jeff Watson, Cabinet Member for Culture, Heritage and Libraries, said: The photos are not just pictures, they are stories, memories, and pieces of a living heritage documenting the changing fashions, faces and festivities that make up the tradition.
“They are a tangible link to the past. Seeing the Salmon Queens dressed in fashions of the time participating in historic celebrations, offers a glimpse into the lives of those who came before.
“Seeing the photos and understanding the values and traditions that define Berwick encourages young people to take part and be an active part of the local community.
“The Salmon Queen festivities are a quirky, typically British tradition not seen anywhere else in the world - a cornerstone of Berwick’s cultural identity. As the town looks to the future and continues to evolve, I hope it continues for many years to come.”
