Wansbeck Square will be re-developed to create an attractive town centre gateway from the new railway station.

Wansbeck Square Strategic Site

This will include high quality landscaping, space for events and activities, and potentially a new community facility.

Potential timescales: designs are currently being developed. 

It is anticipated that demolition works could commence in early Autumn 2024, subject to planning consent.  Construction of a new community and cultural building should commence early in 2025. It is anticipated that the new facility will be opened in May/June 2026. 

Funding: UK Government (Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities), North of Tyne Combined Authority and Northumberland County Council.
