This page provides an overview of planning policy in Northumberland

Planning policies and guidance are used to guide future development and to decide on the acceptability of planning applications. The 'Spatial Policy and Delivery Team' within 'Development Services' is responsible for preparing planning policies for Northumberland (excluding the area covered by the Northumberland National Park).

Current consultations

There are currently no planning policy consultations taking place.

Further consultation on the Core Strategy is proposed to take place later in 2013 with further consultation on housing, economy and Green Belt issues in summer 2013.

 

Core Strategy consultation

The Core Strategy is the principal document in the Northumberland Local Development Plan (or 'Local Plan'). The document is currently under preparation and once finalised it will set out a vision and strategic policies to guide the location new development in Northumberland over the next 15 years and ensure Northumberland's environment is propoerly protected.

Preparation of the Core Stategy is in progress. The Core Strategy Preferred Options document was consulted upon from 6 February 2013 to 20 March 2013. This was the second formal stage in the preparation of the Core Strategy and followed on from consultation on the Core Strategy Issues and Options document which took place between 23 May 2012 and 15 August 2012.

Further consultation on the Core Strategy is proposed to take place later in 2013 with a consultation on housing, economy and Green Belt issues in summer 2013.

Current planning policies for Northumberland

The current planning policies for Northumberland are contained in a number of documents that were produced and approved by the former seven planning authorities in Northumberland.

These policies have been brought together to form the 'Northumberland Consolidated Planning Policy Framework'.  This document lists all the relevant planning policy documents, details the areas of Northumberland they apply to and provides links to the actual documents. Local Development Plan (or 'Local Plan')

The Planning Aid Advice Line provides fifteen minutes of free professional advice to all callers. Eligible callers may then receive further professional advice through a network of professional volunteers, who give their services free of charge to individuals and groups who are unable to afford professional fees.
