Buildings open to Access
The Local Government (Miscellaneous
Provisions) Act 1982 empowers Local Authorities to deal with
privately owned vacant buildings which are not secured against
unauthorised entry or that are likely to become a danger to public
health.
The Public Protection Department are
responsible for ensuring that reported derelict and insecure
buildings are secure and no public health threat is posed to people
in the vicinity. Following the service of a notice, if the
recipient of the notice does not comply, we can do the work in
default and re-charge for the cost of the works.
Accumulations
The council has a wide range of powers to deal
with accumulations of rubbish. For example if the accumulation can
be shown to be prejudicial to health a notice can be served under
the Environmental Protection Act 1990 to have the accumulation
removed. If it is not removed then the person who received the
notice can be prosecuted, the refuse removed and the cost of
removal re-charged.
