Alnwick’s Fantastic New Community PlaZone Is Open 

Alnwick’s fantastic new PlayZone  was officially opened last weekend providing the community with an outdoor all-weather sports space for adults and children to use all year round. 

The PlayZone, situated next to the play park at Alnwick Community Centre, was declared open by local sports star and kick boxer George Rose joined by Chair of the Playzone Steering Group and Northumberland County Councillor Martin Swinbank and Alnwick Town Council Deputy Mayor Councillor John Humphries. 

Also joining in the opening celebrations were local rising sports stars  Evan Baskerville, Isla Shingler, Maisie Brown, Emilia Waugh, and Fearne Smith. 

The new facility has been funded by Northumberland County Council and the Football Foundation with funding from the FA, Premier League and Sport England. 
 
Local County Councillor Martin Swinbank said: “I’m delighted the Alnwick PlayZone is now open. It’s a great space for local residents of all ages to
be active with friends and family and Newcastle United Foundation are providing a week of great activities to mark the occasion.” 

Northumberland County Councillor Wendy Pattison, Cabinet member for sport and culture said: 
The Alnwick PlayZone offers a fantastic opportunity to get involved in your local community while being active and having fun and is one of the first in the county to be completed. Ashington and West Wylam have upgraded facilities and PlayZone construction is ongoing in Amble and Bedlington. Plans are also in place to create further PlayZones in other parts of the county providing safe spaces for communities to keep active.” 
 
Alnwick Town Councillor Humphries added: “I encourage local residents to take part in the week of events. The PlayZone offers a safe environment for a range of sports including football, netball, basketball and fitness activities and I look forward to it being well used.” 
 
Events throughout the week for all ages include 
 
Tuesday 3rd June 
Newcastle United Sports Session for Adults 11 am - 12pm 
 
Wednesday 4th June  
Cornhole Game 4pm – 5.30 pm 
Newcastle United Foundation Sports Session 5 – 11 years, 5pm -6pm 
 
 
Thursday 5th June 
Newcastle United Foundation Sports session for 11-16 years, 5pm - 6pm 
 
Friday 6th June 
Silent Disco for 13 years +. 7pm-8pm. At the Alnwick Community Centre NE66 
 
Saturday 7th June 
Silent Disco 10am -11.45 am for 4 – 8 years. At the Alnwick Community Centre NE66 
 
The Newcastle United Foundation will continue to deliver weekly community sessions at the  PlayZone.
