Beware of Covid pass scam asking for money

scam email inviting residents to apply for and pay for a Covid pass, is circulating in the region.

Residents are being urged to be extra vigilant and to warn elderly and vulnerable friends and relatives to be vigilant and keep one step ahead of these criminals.

The scam email invites people to fill out an application for a Covid pass via a link: https://covidpass-info.com which takes them to what appears to be a convincing replica of the NHS website.

Once on the site you are asked to enter your name, date of birth and address and then asked to pay £4.99 to receive your covid pass.
Residents wanting an NHS Covid Pass can get it free of charge, digitally through the NHS App or the online NHS COVID Pass service, which can be found directly on the NHS website www.nhs.uk.

Philip Soderquest, Head of Housing and Public Protection at Northumberland County Council said:
There is a lot of changing health information in the public domain and unscrupulous criminals are exploiting fears about COVID-19 to prey on members of the public, particularly older and vulnerable people.

Never ever provide bank details by email or over the phone unless you are absolutely certain who you are giving them to and never click on a link from an unknown email source as this can give the crooks access to your computer and personal details.

Please remember that criminals come in all shapes and sizes and can contact you at the door, by phone, post or online.

“Don’t assume everyone is genuine and don’t be rushed into making any quick decisions. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Only criminals will try and rush or panic you into making a decision.”

Residents can report concerns to, or obtain advice from the Citizens Advice consumer service on: 0345 4040506.
