Councillors and staff at the new Hexham to Corbridge active travel corridor

Tynedale travel corridor work gets underway

Construction work is underway to create a new walking and cycling route in Tynedale.

Northumberland County Council successfully secured £14.7m from the UK Government’s Levelling Up Fund to upgrade active travel routes in both Bedlington and between Corbridge and Hexham. The funding is ringfenced for active travel schemes and can’t be used for other projects.

In Tynedale work has now started on the link between Hexham train station and Corbridge, improving both local connections within Hexham and encouraging active travel trips between Hexham and Corbridge. It will largely follow the A695 between the two town’s rail stations forming connections with the hospital and the school.

The route is a mix of shared and segregated pedestrian and cyclist use and some short connecting paths. A number of new crossings will also be installed, along with an improved pedestrian junction at the Peth Head/Dene Street junction as well as speed limit changes and traffic calming measures.

The works also include upgraded street lighting, new signage, new road markings, path and drainage improvements, bus stop shelter and seating replacement, tree trimming and surface treatment.

Councillor Richard Wearmouth, Deputy Leader of the Council and Chair of the Council’s Walking and Cycling Board, said: “It’s great to see spades in the ground on this fantastic scheme.

“As well as being a lovely route connecting two beautiful market towns, it will also help move people away from a reliance on cars to more sustainable modes of transport, improve road safety for pedestrians and cyclists and help cut harmful emissions.”

Traffic lights are currently in place to ensure safe working and keep traffic flowing along the A695 near Hexham and every effort is being made to minimise the impact and duration of the works.

Advance notice boards will be put up giving further information, near to the time of future phases of works. Phases will open when complete and the entire route is scheduled to open in early 2027.
