Supported Lodgings

We are looking to recruit supported lodgings hosts who can provide good quality accommodation and support to young people aged 16-25 who are in need of accommodation.

Do you have a spare room and the time and patience to support a young person who is in need of accommodation?

We are looking to recruit supported lodgings hosts who can provide good quality accommodation and support to young people aged 16-25 who are in need of accommodation.  The service aims to act of a stepping-stone to independence, supporting young people to develop the skills they need as they transition into adulthood.
 

Why is supported lodgings needed?

For some young people, living with their family may not be an option and therefore they need somewhere safe and secure that will provide the support they need before they can move on into independence.

This can be as a result of:
  • Family relationships breaking down
  • Young people transitioning from foster care or residential care
  • Young people having additional needs that requires support – mental health, learning disabilities, substance misuse
  • Young people seeking asylum in the UK
  • Or young people who face emergency situations within their own accommodation
 

Who can apply?

As a service we accept applications for any individual within the community that has a spare room and feels that they have the time and patience to support a young person in need. 
You could be:
  • one person, a couple or a family
  • working or unemployed
  • married or unmarried
  • straight or gay

You must be over 21 years, but there is no upper age limit, as long as you are fit and healthy.

Supported Lodgings helps young people to learn the skills they need to live independently and acts as a stepping stone towards independence. 

You will provide informal advice and guidance to a young person who will be living in your home and helping them to develop their skills as they transition towards independence. 
 
As well as providing a bedroom you will offer practical and emotional support depending on their needs. For instance, you might be asked to help a young person learn how to cook, clean or improve their budgeting skills. 
 
You will also have responsibility for supporting their progress, reporting any concerns to the young person’s worker and maintaining regular contact with their allocated worker.

We want to recruit people from the whole community, it is essential that providers have the following skills: 

  •  an understanding and respect for young people 
  • an ability to interact with young people fairly, honestly, openly and objectively 
  • a calm, relaxed and friendly attitude 
  • an ability to work with professionals as part of a team 
  • to be able to keep information concerning the young person confidential 
  • to believe that everyone has the right to equal opportunity in life, regardless of difference, such as, skin-colour, gender, sexuality, age, disability, culture or religion 
  • to promote and empower the independence of young people you are supporting 
  • to be fit and healthy, as the task can be physically and mentally demanding as well as being highly rewarding 
  • to participate in the assessment and statutory checks process 
  • to ensure that your accommodation is suitable via our health and safety checklist 
  • to attend regular training as organised by the service, this may be virtual or via face-to-face training 
  • to participate in regular supervision sessions with your allocated supported lodgings worker
