Research and statistics relating to the economic well-being of Northumberland
This suite of documents form part of the County Council’s research base for the Northumberland Local Economic Assessment. The information is intended to inform service departments and external partners in planning future activity in the county. This includes:
These reports update the previously commissioned Economic Scenario’s for Northumberland. The first report provides academic forecasts using the North East Economic Model (NEEM) from St Chad’s College, Durham University which project how the economic structure of the county may change in the medium to long term. It also includes scenario’s specifically considering the potential impact of broadband infrastructure on the economy. The second report use the same model to consider the potential development of the low carbon sector. As with any projections, they include major caveats which should be noted prior to use given the uncertainty in the global economy at present. As such economic projections of this type should only be used as part of a wider evidence base.

These reports were originally produced for the Rio Tinto Alcan Response Group, established to co-ordinate support for those affected by the closure of the Aluminium Smelter in Lynemouth. The first report sets out a statistical summary of key economic and social factors and the potential impact of the closure of the facility upon them. The second report, produced by St Chad’s College, Durham University uses the NEEM to project the likely impact of the closure to the economy in the longer term.

The new Job Seekers Allowance (JSA) Claimant Count figures for October 2011 were released by the Office for National Statistics on 16 November. In light of the recent closure announcement by Rio Tinto Alcan, Northumberland County Council Policy and Research team have produced a short summary of the latest figures to show Northumberland's current position in terms of unemployment and how the local areas around the Alcan site already have the highest levels of JSA claimants in the county.
