Teams praised after Storm Eowyn batters county

Council teams have been thanked for working round the clock to restore services and support residents following Storm Eowyn.

Across the county the storm led to scores of school closures and a number of incidents where property was damaged and thousands were left without power.

As Storm Eowyn swept across Northumberland on Friday, January 24 it caused:

  • 56 schools closures

  • Around 12,000 properties to lose electricity

  • Roofs to blow off buildings in Amble and Berwick

  • Slates off a number of other properties

  • 124 reports of trees down

  • 36 weather related incidents which had to be attended by Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service

  • Country Park closures due to danger from fallen trees.

Council teams worked throughout the weekend to roads clear, make buildings safe, clean up town centres and look after communities. Contact was maintained with the county’s most vulnerable residents throughout as power outages continued into this week.

Council Leader Glen Sanderson said: “Once again the worst of weather brought the best out of our staff and our communities.

“I’d like to pay tribute to all our teams, all our services and all our partners and volunteers for everything they’ve done to help our residents since the storm hit.

“It’s been a difficult and distressing time for some communities, but I know in times like this everyone just pulls together to look after each other.

“While we have largely returned to business as usual, we will continue to reach out to those affected who need any further support.”
