Northumberland County Council is encouraging residents and visitors alike to support local markets and high streets as part of a wider drive to boost the county’s economy and celebrate everything that makes our towns and villages unique.

Northumberland boasts weekly and monthly markets across Northumberland with council-ran marketing including; Morpeth, Hexham, Blyth and Ashington – shopping local not only supports small businesses and traders but helps to keep our communities thriving and connected.

Cllr Richard Wearmouth, Deputy Leader of Northumberland County Council and Cabinet Member for Corporate Services, said:
“Local markets are the beating heart of our towns, offering fresh produce, artisan goods, and a chance to meet the people behind the stalls. When you shop local, you’re doing more than just buying something – you’re investing in your community, supporting local jobs, and helping to keep our town centres vibrant.

We know how important our markets are, not just for the local economy but for community spirit and we’re proud to champion them. I’d encourage everyone to visit their local market, meet the traders, and see the fantastic range of products on offer.”

The council continues to work closely with local traders and community groups to support markets through improvements to public spaces, promotional campaigns, and events that encourage footfall and family visits.

Whether it’s picking up fresh fruit and vegetables, handmade crafts, or unique gifts, your local market has something for everyone, and every purchase makes a difference.
