26/1 9pm Storm Eowyn latest

26/1 9pm UPDATE:
Latest from Scottish Power Energy Networks:

Supporting our customers has been at the heart of everything we’ve been doing around Storm Eowyn – from proactively contacting customers on our Priority Services Register before the storm hit to the welfare support being provided to the communities still without power. We’ve increased resources within our customer services team to help manage the thousands of calls we’ve received – around two months’ worth of calls within 48 hours; proactively sent around 200,000 SMS messages; and brought in people from every part of the business to make calls out to customers, with a focus on those who are medically-dependent on electricity.

From the outset of the storm, we’ve offered hotel accommodation for those who need it - either organising directly for customers or reimbursing them if they arrange it themselves. We’ve also provided access to hot food for every customer for every meal – whether by ordering food in for them, providing them with vouchers to order themselves or directing them to one of the 9 food vans or 14 warm hubs we’ve had in operation in the worst affected areas. We’ve also provided generators for those who need them most to ensure they have an alternative supply.

The scale of this operation cannot be underestimated, with our entire network area affected – which is very unusual – including areas that haven’t experienced lengthy outages before. We’re pulling out all the stops and doing everything to help our customers while our engineering teams work round the clock to get everyone back on supply.

  • Up to £40 per meal per household being offered until the power is restored – issued via cheque or voucher)
  • Reimbursement of hotel accommodation for up to £200 per night
  • Hotel accommodation booked by SPEN in hotels partnered with our provider
  • Generator may be available to electrically medically dependant

3pm:
Council teams have been working round the clock to restore services and support residents following Storm Eowyn.

Across the county it led to scores of school closures and a number of incidents where property was damaged and thousands left without power.

Key figures and incidents included:

  • 56 schools closed in the county

  • Around 12,000 properties off-supply in county (Friday, January 24)

  • A roof blown off a shop in Berwick town centre

  • Slates blown off roofs in Station Road, Ashington

  • A roof blown off a home under construction in Amble, damaging two neighbouring properties.

  • 124 reports of trees down

  • 36 weather related incidents attended by Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service.

We are aware there are thousands of homes still without power in the county (as of 1.30pm 25/1) and are in contact with Northern Powergrid and Scottish Power who are working hard to restore power as quickly as possible.

Northern Powergrid is pro-actively updating customers without power via text message and social media channels. Their national helpline to answer calls and offer support is available 24/7 by calling 105.

Council teams worked to provide business as usual wherever possible, while keeping roads clear, making buildings safe and looking after communities. Contact has been maintained with the county’s most vulnerable residents.

Teams are working over the weekend to support residents. Extra staff are carrying out town-centre clean-ups and clearing rubbish brought in by the storm.

Country parks have re-opened after safety inspections, alongside the majority of Household Waste recovery Centres.

The Council continues to liaise with a number of Local Resilience Centres in case needed to support residents left without power.
