Vape message taking to the county's roads

An important reminder for vapes to be disposed of properly is taking to the county’s roads.

Recently, Northumberland County Council became one of the first local authorities in the UK to offer vape tube recycling bins at its Household Waste Recovery Centre’s (HWRCs). Now, efforts are being stepped up to make sure that residents are aware of how and where to recycle their vape tubes responsibly.

The tubes contain lithium batteries, which can be highly explosive when not disposed of correctly. There is a real risk of the battery being punctured by waste compaction equipment in vehicles and depots, causing explosions, disrupting collection routes and putting lives at risk.

All of Northumberland’s HWRCs have vape tube bins. Alternatively, people can return the tubes to the retailer they bought them from, where they will then be sent to be responsibly recycled.

Northumberland’s bin lorry fleet now have banners on them, relaying this message as they are out and about doing their rounds.

Councillor Colin Horncastle, Cabinet Member for Looking After Our Environment, said: “With the number of people in the UK who vape increasing, it is important that we take the steps to recycle vape tubes responsibly.”

“When vape tubes aren’t properly disposed of responsibly, there is a chance they could cause a fire. These fires risk the lives of depot workers, refuse collectors and firefighters and can also cause millions of pounds worth of damage.”

“Having branding on our refuse collection wagons is a great way to raise awareness of the responsible way to recycle vapes. These vehicles cover the entire county so hopefully the message will be seen by a large number of residents.”
