A calculator and a spreadsheet. The council is working on its budget plans

Budget plans to be discussed

Budget plans to deliver value for money for residents and ensure the best possible services are being developed by the Council.

A report coming to Cabinet next month details the latest position on budget planning, ahead of the 2024-25 budget as well as the Medium Term Financial Plan for 2024-28.

Estimated savings of £10.859 million are proposed for the next financial year, although these will continue to be reviewed and developed over the coming months.

Importantly there will be no cuts to council services.

Council Leader Councillor Glen Sanderson said: “Budget planning has been ongoing for a number of months and I’m very grateful for all the work that has gone on behind the scenes so far in what remains a period of financial uncertainty on a global scale.

“Thankfully we remain in a strong financial position, and this will remain a cornerstone of decision making as we go forward.

“We have a new Corporate Plan that sets out our key priorities and shapes how services will be delivered, and performance and improvement measured over the coming years and all our budget plans will align with this.

"I am always clear that any savings must not affect our frontline services and they must remain fit for purpose. Wherever possible we’ll be looking to work more efficiently, using technology where needed to do things the best way we can.

"Our three key priorities remain - to give value for money to our residents, to drive investment and jobs, and to tackle Inequalities. These will continue to be set in stone going forward."

The public and other stakeholders will also be consulted on the budget plans in the near future.

It will run from December to January to allow for full discussion and debate with all political groups and their Leaders, local area councils; parish and town councils; and, with staff and the unions.

People will also have the opportunity to take part in an online consultation in the coming weeks.

The budget plans will be initially considered by scrutiny committee on November 27th, Cabinet on December 12th before a further round of meetings in the new year. Final proposals will then be put before full Council and discussed on February 21st 2024.
