Wellbeing support group is here to help

If you live in North Northumberland and are suffering from confidence issues, low self- esteem and mild depression, why not check out local health and wellbeing group Mind and Sole which organises a range of activities and support.

The group is supportive and friendly and always welcomes new members. It is run by a team of volunteers and offers a range of activities including crafts, fitness, knit and natter, music, walking and talking and yoga to name just a few.

The timetable is on the website www.mindandsolealnwick.com  and is always being added to, or ring 01665 603040 for a friendly chat.
The group has also expanded in response to community needs to provide support groups for cancer, stroke, fibromyalgia and autism and offers therapeutic cold-water sessions.

The office on Waggonway Road in Alnwick is also a ‘welcoming hub’ where anyone is welcome to call by for a drink, a chat and to access free wifi.
Founded by Christine Smith five years ago, initially as a small walking group, Mind and Sole has gone from strength to strength.
Christine has personal experience of mental health challenges and offers an empathetic and reassuring environment. She said:
We run walking groups in Alnwick, Berwick-Upon-Tweed, Amble, Druridge Bay, Wooler and Morpeth. These walking and talking sessions are short and gentle and are very accessible. The emphasis is very much about the chatter and the social interactions, helping people living in isolation, who would possibly never go out on their own, but need a gentle form of exercise due to health conditions. All our groups end with refreshments.”

The Mind and Sole hub also operates a drop-in service for people who are struggling with any form of Mental Health and need to be able to speak to someone immediately. There are also free counselling sessions which are led by two psychotherapists.

Additionally, Mind & Sole hosts events ranging from car boot sales to wellbeing talks and even games and quiz nights.

The group is supported by a team of volunteers and the walking group is supported by Northumberland County Council’s sports development team through their Get Onside funding. Get Onside is an exciting new activity programme from Sport England, funded by the National Lottery, and delivered by the Football Foundation, which is supporting residents in key communities to get more active.
