New student council will champion the voice of young people with SEND

A new student council for Northumberland has set out its ambition to champion the voice of children and young people with SEND and to drive positive change.

The Student Inclusion Council, or SIC. for short, is made up of young people from across the county who are passionate about making a difference.

The new council members met for the first time at a special event in the council chamber at County Hall, Morpeth, where they each shared their experiences and their hopes for the future.

These included examples of ways their schools and council services have supported them to overcome any challenges they have faced and suggestions for improvements to be made.

They were welcomed by Deputy Leader of the Council, Richard Wearmouth

Cllr Wearmouth said: “I would like to thank all the young people who have volunteered their time to join our new Student Inclusion Council.

“We want everyone in Northumberland to live the best life they can and to enjoy all that our county has to offer.

It is clear from the powerful speeches I’ve heard today that all the new members of the council are passionate about making a difference to the lives of other young people and I look forward to working closely with them so we can make that difference together.”

The new SIC. members will meet regularly and work alongside the council’s Education and SEND team to play an active role in shaping the future of education and council services.

They will share their progress and news updates from their meetings and champion the voice of all young people with SEND in the county.
