Runners to head to Northumberland for ‘Britain’s most beautiful’ marathon

Around 3,000 runners are making final preparations for this year’s Active Northumberland Kielder Marathon weekend.

Organised by Events of the North in partnership with Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, Northumberland County Council and Northumbrian Water, the event will involve two days of races at Landal Kielder Waterside, on 1 and 2 October.

Founded in 2010, the Kielder Marathon weekend has established itself as one of the country’s best loved autumn running events, offering a variety of races, including junior runs, a 10K, half marathon, run-bike-run duathlon and the full marathon. As well as the challenge of the undulating course, participants are attracted to Kielder each year by the stunning Northumberland scenery and a renowned race day atmosphere.

Northumberland County Councillor Jeff Watson, cabinet member for health lives said: "This is set to be a great weekend and we're delighted to welcome lots of visitors to Northumberland from far and wide, who are either taking part in one of the many races, events or spectating.

"This is a great opportunity to really make a weekend of it, explore Kielder Water and visit some of the other attractions that Northumberland has to offer. The atmosphere as always will be electric over the weekend, and I'd like to wish all participants the best of luck in their chosen event."

David Hall, Northumbrian Water’s head of commercial strategy and transformation, adds: “We are really looking forward to one of the most exciting and vibrant events on our calendar here at Landal Kielder Waterside – the Active Northumberland Kielder Marathon weekend.

“It’s always a thrill to play host to this amazing occasion, with thousands of runners and riders, all facing their own personal challenges, for an inspiring variety of reasons, benefitting some really worthwhile causes, and set among some of the most beautiful scenery in the world.

Alongside leading club athletes, many runners during the Kielder Marathon weekend will be raising money for good causes, including the event’s official charity partner, Bright Northumbria.
