Beginners walking football class starts at Wentworth

A new walking football class, aimed specifically at beginners, has started at Wentworth Sports & Leisure Centre in Hexham.

The class gives people an opportunity to play and enjoy this popular sport at a slower pace, helping them to keep an active lifestyle regardless of their age or fitness level.

It runs every Friday 1.30-2.30 pm and is open to anyone – even those who have never played. It would particularly suit the elderly, those who have never played football and those who have an injury or a health condition.

Mark Warnes, Chief Executive of Active Northumberland said:
“Both locally and nationally walking football is growing in popularity as thousands of older men – and some women – are rediscovering the joys of football,

“It is a fantastic team sport which helps counter social isolation but the mental and physical health benefits from regular gentle exercise are also enormous.”

Bryan Johnson  who attends this advanced session added: “I didn’t expect to ever play competitive football again, but walking football has been fantastic. All the old skills have come back! As well as good exercise it’s such a good laugh and so much fun.  It’s great to feel the buzz of playing football again.”

If you would like to find out more about joining the sessions please contact Wentworth Sports & Leisure Centre on 01670 620 200, speak to someone on reception or come along to the centre on a Friday at 1.30 pm.

For those who are a little fitter, there is a more advanced walking football group that has been running for some time and they meet at the centre every Friday at the earlier time of 12 – 1.30pm and always welcome new members.

There is no need to book in advance. Sessions cost £4 and involve gentle functional exercise to improve balance, coordination, flexibility and strength, warm-ups, coaching drills and games. Extra support is given for those with medical conditions.

Wear loose comfortable clothing, soft soled shoes and bring a bottle of water.
