A world of books on offer

Northumberland Libraries marked World Book Day by spreading the news about all it has to offer.

The library service wants to let residents know that the doors are open post-Covid and everyone is welcome to pop in – whether that’s to borrow books, attend events, research family history, use the IT equipment or book community spaces to meet in a safe and welcoming environment.

During the lockdowns Northumberland Libraries proved a lifeline for many people who used the online services to access information and keep themselves occupied by reading from the wide range of digital books.

Willy Wonka and Mary Poppins were at Cramlington to promote the Turn the Page on a New Chapter campaign to encourage people to return to their libraries

Northumberland boasts 30 libraries across its towns and villages from Alnwick and Berwick to Prudhoe and Ponteland, as well as a mobile service and, of course, the e-library services.

Library Service Manager Alison Peaden said: “Now that people are getting out and about a bit more we want to remind residents that libraries are a wonderful resource on their doorsteps.

“Social interaction with staff, other library users and friends is particularly important for people who may have felt isolated – whether that’s older members of our communities or young mums.

“It is proven that reading is good for mental health - mix that in with all the free events and a wide range of opportunities and it really is the golden ticket.

“World Book Day was the perfect opportunity for us to shout about the service and to encourage people to love their local libraries.”
