Residents share their views on town’s future at Morpeth Forum event

Ambitions for a new theatre, museum and community orchard were among the potential projects under the spotlight at a special Morpeth Forum drop-in session.

Hundreds of residents called into the event at Morpeth Town Hall to find out about ongoing projects along with plans for the future.

Cllr Richard Wearmouth, Deputy Leader of Northumberland County Council and ward member for Kirkhill, said: “Thank you to everyone who came along. It was absolutely buzzing and great to be back giving people an update on the tonnes of work going on in and around the town.

“There was lots of enthusiasm for things like our environmental improvements and support for a future community theatre or cultural venue.

“We’ve had really useful feedback, which is incredibly welcome and we’ll compile and analyse all the responses to help us shape our plans for the future, which we will then share with the community.”

Residents found out about updates from Northumberland County Council and Active Northumberland on the new leisure centre, which is on track to be complete at the end of January 2023.

News on the refurbishment of County Hall, solar car port and works on the Goose Hill Car Park were on display.

The council's Climate Change Team also shared how people can get involved in their plans for the county to be Carbon Neutral by 2030, such as the trial of a pilot scheme to collect residents' food waste for recycling.

Morpeth Town Council provided updates on the completed restoration of the Pavillion and St James Community Centre along with information on potential environmental improvements at Allery Banks.  It also asked for views on additional activities that could be provided in Carlisle Park.

The Greater Morpeth Development Trust had a very positive response to potential plans to establish a cultural venue and/or community theatre amongst a host of other activities.

The Morpeth Forum is a partnership between Northumberland County Council and Morpeth Town Council. Its aim is to oversee how the town develops over the coming years in line with the Neighbourhood Plan and make best use of the County Council’s key sites.
