Northumberland County Council marks UK ASB Awareness Week

Northumberland County Council is highlighting its commitment to tackling anti-social behaviour and making local communities safer by joining the national ASB Awareness Week campaign, which runs 18-24 July 2022.

The campaign is designed to encourage people to make a stand against crime, while shining a light on the experiences of victims and the support available via councils, partnerships groups and the police.

Examples on anti-social behaviour include: violence or threats of violence, racial and other forms of harassment, domestic abuse , criminal activity, including using homes to cultivate and sell drugs, noise nuisance, verbal abuse/intimidation, damage to property, drug and alcohol abuse.

Teams at Northumberland County Council and Northumberland Fire & Rescue are joining with Northumbria Police throughout the week to visit anti-social behaviour hotspots.

They will be reassuring to those living in these areas, handing out personal safety devices to specific households, undertaking evening patrols and carrying out fire safety checks at the homes of the vulnerable.

There is an ongoing issue in Blyth and Amble of young people riding quad bikes and off road bikes on roads and green spaces.  Community Protection Notices and tenancy warning letters will be issued to tenants involved in this motorcycle disorder.

Northumberland County Councilor, Colin Horncastle, cabinet member for community services said:
Together with our partners, we want to reduce crime and disorder, anti-social behaviour and high harm behaviour that adversely affects communities, the local environment and local businesses

We know that anti-social behaviour can cause much distress for those who experience it and hope that by raising awareness of what ASB is and the different routes on how to report it, this will be a step in the right direction to help keep communities safer.”

Northumberland County Council has an ASB team and a community safety team that work to ensure residents and tenants feel safe in their home and neighbourhood.

Organised by community safety specialists Resolve, ASB Awareness Week is being backed by the Home Office, Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG), Local Government Association (LGA), National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) and the National Fire Chiefs’ Council (NFCC).
