The bunker site in Hexham where the new carpark has officially opened

New Hexham carpark officially opens

Hexham’s newest carpark is officially open.

The carpark, off Alemouth Road site has 250 spaces, including electric vehicle charging provision and will operate as a long stay facility, helping alleviate the pressure on Wentworth car park caused by vehicles parking all day.

Following public feedback earlier this year the council will also be keeping around 100 long stay spaces in Wentworth carpark in the town centre.
Councillor John Riddle, Cabinet Member for Local Services, said: “We’re pleased to have our newest carpark formally open.

“While it has been available for use for the last few weeks to give additional capacity in the run up to Christmas, the white lines are now down and signs are fully in place for it to be formally opened.

"We listened to feedback to ensure we have the right balance of short, medium and long-term parking and I know the new spaces should give a real boost to the town.

Hopefully the new facility will be well used over the festive period and be a popular amenity in the future.”

Hexham Central with Acomb County Councillor Trevor Cessford  said: “I'm very happy that the additional long-stay parking spaces are now available.

“I'm also delighted that the county council agreed with my request to keep some long stay parking at the Wentworth and also make an area there for disabled badge holders as well.

“It has been a long wait to develop this land into retail and parking but hopefully it'll all be worthwhile now, benefiting both the workers and shoppers in the town as well as tourists.”
