Further improvements underway at Concordia Leisure Centre

A scheme is underway to improve the air flow and temperature at Concordia Leisure Centre thanks to a £500k investment from Northumberland County Council.

A new air handling unit is being installed in the centre which will improve the circulation and temperature of the air, especially around the pool hall.  It will also be more environmentally efficient than the current air circulation system.

Northumberland County Councillor, Jeff Watson, cabinet member for health lives said:
Active Northumberland leisure centres are a really important part of the local community, but they are increasingly costly to run and there are large pieces of operating equipment behind the scenes that need to be maintained or renewed at timely intervals.

The new air pumps that will be installed at Concordia will not only make the ambient temperature more comfortable and consistent for our customers but will also result in improved energy efficiency and a reduction in carbon emissions.”

Every effort is being made to ensure the installation work will have minimal impact on the public. The unit will be situated on the roof of Concordia and will be lifted by crane out of the centre’s operating hours. The work is currently ongoing and is expected to be complete by Christmas.

Over recent years, Northumberland County Council has invested over £65 million countywide to upgrade and transform sport and leisure facilities and to enhance customer experience.

Investment includes the building of new leisure centres in Berwick, Morpeth and Ponteland and major investment to refurbish and revitalise centres in Newbiggin, Blyth and Hexham.

In addition, it has recently invested £1million to upgrade the operating plant at six swimming pools across the county.
