Poster winners with councillors and staff

Berwick’s floral tribute to the Queen

Girlguides, Brownies and Rainbows from Berwick have been planting bulbs to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee this year.

Over 9,500 bulbs have been prepared and planted at Flagstaff Park in Berwick to support the Queen’s Green Canopy - an initiative which invites people in the UK to plant a tree and bulbs for the Jubilee to mark Queen Elizabeth’s 70-year reign in June.

The bulbs have been planted in the shape of ‘ER 70’, which will create a special floral display when they begin to bloom this spring and the young people’s groups have come together to celebrate their achievements with a special picnic, cake and poster competition. The winning posters have been erected at the park for all to see.

Local County Councillor, Catherine Seymour provided the funding for the project from her members small schemes fund and said: “I was delighted to be involved in this project. It was fantastic to see the enthusiasm of the young people planting in our local green space areas and to see their creativity shine through in the poster competition.

“It’s so important we expand and enhance our green spaces as much as we can. Not only are they beautiful to visit, but they are a huge part of our climate change action plan to be carbon neutral by 2030.

“It was a lovely celebration all round and I’m very much looking forward to seeing more community projects like this in the future.”
The site was prepared by Northumberland County Council staff along with the help of volunteers from Friends of the Parks and Berwick Community Crew Youth Group. The planting was organised by Frances Povey and Jimmy Reith from the Council’s Countryside Services with layout design by parks officer, Kate Dixon.

Northumberland County Councillor John Riddle, cabinet member for local services said: “It's great that we are supporting local community groups like these to make our areas greener. The E II R 70 bulb planting will be a lasting legacy for years to come and get better every year as the bulbs multiply.”

“I’m so proud of all the work we are doing in Northumberland to work together to promote the protection of our natural environment.”
