You've Got This Challenge

Challenge successfully helps new mums get more active

A group of new mothers living in south east Northumberland have just completed a fantastic new challenge aimed at helping them to get more active following the birth of their babies.

The ‘You’ve Got This’ Challenge, run by Active Northumberland is part of their popular Mams on the Move initiative involving a series of fun, low cost, indoor and outdoor exercise classes for new mums and their babies.

The four week challenge took place in January. Each week participants were encouraged to attend two mams on the move classes as well as a weekly catch up class after a fitness session, where they received fitness tips and nutritional advice to help keep them on track.

The classes were relaxed and fun and designed so participants could bring their babies along too. They included Mams with Prams, Baby Tone, Buggy Walks and Core Stability.

Northumberland County Councillor Cath Homer, cabinet member with responsibility for leisure said:
“ The pioneering Mams on the Move initiative aims to provide new mothers with the opportunities, advice and encouragement they may need to get active and promote the many benefits that  physical activity can bring, including a positive change in mental health.”

Jemma Burt, Wellbeing Co-ordinator from Active Northumberland who has led the challenge said:
“This challenge encouraged ladies to choose a goal that was personal to them,  whether it was to make time for themselves, gain confidence or even lose a few pounds. The challenge was a great success and only the start for these ladies.”

Sarah Reeves who took part in the ‘You’ve Got This’ Challenge said:
This challenge was just what I needed. I was so pleased I’ve lost 2.8kg of which 2.4kg was fat loss. I’ve also lost 5cm from my waist & 5cm from my hips. Most importantly, I’m feeling much better and can even squeeze into a couple of pairs of pre-pregnancy jeans!”

Tanita measurements - weight and body fat -  were taken at the beginning and end of the challenge and those who completed the challenge received a certificate and a goody bag. Participants also received exclusive access to a private Facebook Group to receive support and motivation, as well as fitness advice from instructors.

Due to the success of the challenge another ‘You’ve Got This’ Challenge will take place in the coming months. Further information will be released shortly.
