Appeal to find owners of severely neglected dog found in Ashington

An appeal is being made to members of the public to come forward if they have any information about a dog that has been found abandoned and in poor condition in the Ashington area.

The elderly, stray Shar Pei was picked up by a member of the public on Milburn Road in Ashington on Saturday 19th December 2020.

He was found to be underweight with an old injury to his front leg making it difficult for him to walk. The dog has severe eye and ear infections which have been left untreated resulting in him being unable to hear or see; the dog's nails were extremely overgrown and although microchipped his details appear to be out of date.

The dog, now named Nelson, was taken by an Animal Welfare Officer from Northumberland County Council to Berwick Animal Rescue Kennels where he is being cared for and nursed back to health.

An animal welfare officer from Northumberland County Council said: “This dog has been neglected and is in very poor condition. Someone, somewhere knows who he belongs to, or has seen him about. We want to get to the bottom of why he was abandoned and bring the person responsible to account.”

If you have any information, no matter how small, please contact the Animal Welfare Team on 0345 600 6400 or by email to Animal.Welfare@northumberland.gov.uk in the strictest of confidence.
