Overnight Spine Road closures for essential works

A series of overnight weekend road closures will be taking place on the A189 Spine Road to allow for essential maintenance works.

Each year in the spring these works are carried out at a time when there is minimum disruption to drivers and before the grass verges grow too high to hide litter.

The work will include sweeping, drain emptying and maintenance, minor road defect repairs, grass cutting, strimming and litter picking.

This year staff are altering the way they work so they can stick to social distancing rules put in place due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The work will take place along the Spine Road over a number of Saturday nights, starting on 18th April, from 8pm to 6am on the stretch between Moor Farm roundabout and the Three Horse Shoes roundabout.

While this stretch of road is next to the hospital, emergency vehicles will be able to pass through the road closure if necessary.

After this weekend there will be a further three Saturday overnight closures on the 25th April, 2nd May and 16th May as the work moves north along the A189.

Councillor Glen Sanderson, Cabinet Member for Environment and Local Services, said: “This work is important to ensure the road is kept in safe condition and we’re also taking the opportunity to clear litter at the same time to ensure this main arterial route is kept clean and attractive.

“The safety of our staff is paramount and we’ve managed to plan this work so all those involved are able to abide by the social distancing rules.”
