Wentworth to welcome Learning and Skills Service

Northumberland County Council’s Hexham base for the Learning and Skills Service is to move into Wentworth Leisure Centre in Spring 2019, creating a community hub integrating leisure, health and education services.

The Council’s Learning and Skills Service offers a wide and varied range of second chance, technical and leisure education, to residents aged 16 years and over.

Work is now underway to create new classrooms and additional studio space in which to house the range of learning opportunities.

There will be no disruption to the Learning and Skills classes currently running at the existing site at Gatehouse Open Learning Centre on Wanless Lane, but after the Easter holidays break, classes will resume in the new site at Wentworth.

All existing clubs that currently use the studios at Wentworth have been given alternative space while the alteration work is taking place.

Mark Tweedie, Chief Executive of Active Northumberland said: “ We are committed to creating opportunities for residents in Northumberland to maintain good health and wellbeing. Taking care of your mental health is just as important as being active and eating healthily. One simple recognised step to maintaining good mental health is to keep an active mind through reading and continuous learning. Offering education classes from the centre will be a great addition to all the other fantastic services we provide at Wentworth. ”

Northumberland County Councillor Wayne Daley, cabinet member for Children’s Services said: “ Our learning programme offers a wide range of high quality courses and apprenticeships that can lead to recognised qualifications and improve people's confidence and skills while also providing a great way to meet new people or secure work. To do this in such a fabulous venue will be exciting for our residents.”

Caroline Tulett, Head of Skills and Employability at Northumberland County Council said:
“ We look forward to the move into Wentworth Leisure Centre where our learners will have access to modern teaching space, ample free parking and a range of other facilities and activities. We are excited about not just having better facilities for learners, but the chances to enhance their wider wellbeing by learning in such a great setting. There are opportunities for learners to get involved in Active Northumberland too, like volunteering, work experience and internships. It is an exciting new development for both Active Northumberland and the Learning and Skills Service, and we’re thrilled to be opening the doors to the facilities very soon.”
