Blaze your own career trail

Full details of the apprenticeship pop-up events are:As part of National Apprenticeship Week, 4 to 8 March 2019, Northumberland County Council is promoting a programme of great opportunities for people across the county.

The national ‘Fire It Up’ and ‘Blaze Your Own Career Trail’ campaign is being used to attract more apprentices to the programme - which offers opportunities at every level - from entry right up to degree.

Apprenticeship pop-up events will take place at a number of venues around the county during the week - offering opportunities to meet the team and find out more.

It will be at Cobalt Business Park on March 6 and 9; Manor Walks shopping centre at Cramlington on March 7 and 8; Ashington Leisure Centre on March 11 and 12; Wentworth Leisure Centre in Hexham on March 15 and 18; and Berwick Adult Learning Centre on March 20.  Full details of venue and times can be found at www.northumberland.gov.uk/apprenticeships

Over the last six years the council has taken on more than 1,260 apprentices, with schools in the county taking on over 330 trainees.

The programme provides the opportunity for career progression with a number of apprentices having secured full time permanent posts within the council.  Charlotte Straker for example studied business administration levels 2 and 3 and has now secured a full time job with Active Northumberland.

Deputy Council Leader Cllr Wayne Daley, who is also Cabinet Member for Children’s Services, said: “Apprenticeships are incredibly valuable to the council, to partner organisations and to businesses in Northumberland. We support hundreds of apprentices each year and they play an important role in the work that we do.

“We are about to start the next phase of our recruitment drive for a further 60 new apprentices, with the commitment that by 2020 we will be supporting up to 400.

“Apprenticeships are an excellent option for many people.  They aren’t just for young people though, they are for adults too who may be out of work or looking for a change in career.  At the council we offer opportunities at a number of levels - from entry to degree.

“There are some great opportunities for people to gain the skills, and experience necessary to enter the world of employment. Not only do apprentices gain valuable workplace experience, the council also offers further education and employment to many of the young people it takes on.”
