Community hall scoops funding

St Aidan’s Hall Trust, Berwick has scooped £3,500 of funding to continue their improvement works.

It came from the Members Local Improvement Schemes budget, a £1m pot which gives £15,000 to each of the 67 elected members to carry out capital works or capital improvements within their wards.

The St Aidan’s Hall Trust has recently received funding from Berwick North Councillor Catherine Seymour through the fund to continue the improvements to the community space.

The hall is enjoyed by local groups, dance classes, craft groups and foreign language classes which benefits the local and wider area. It’s also used for coffee mornings, children's parties, quiz and bingo nights.

Councillor Seymour said “This heritage building has benefited the community for many years and I am pleased to be able to contribute to its restoration.

“Members of the Trust and volunteers give much of their time and effort to keep the building in good use, so that current and future generations can enjoy and I applaud their ongoing commitment.”

Recent works have included the installation of new windows in the main hall, electric panel heaters throughout and a complete overhaul of the toilet block. A new roof and new fire doors are to be fitted during the summer.

Maureen Hattle, Treasurer of St Aidan’s Hall Trust, added: “We cannot thank Councillor Seymour enough for her contribution of £3,500, to St Aidan’s Hall Trust. The grant has been put towards improvement works to the hall which is enjoyed by many community groups”

Hundreds of community initiatives have benefited from over £18m through the Members Local Improvement Fund since 2000 within Northumberland.

Members of the community can petition their locally elected councillors directly for worthy local initiatives that would benefit from funding. This work can include everything from carriageway or footpath construction, resurfacing works, new street lighting columns and traffic calming schemes, parking restrictions, contributions to village or community halls.
