How to volunteer

We offer a wide range of volunteer opportunities across our services.  

We aim to offer valuable volunteering opportunities in a supportive environment where volunteers are part of the wider team adding value to our work. 

As part of our duty of care to our staff, volunteers and wider communities we operate a safer recruitment approach to ensure we have the best team available. 

What can volunteers expect of Northumberland County Council? 

We want you to enjoy your time with us and get the most out of it.  Therefore, our commitment to you is that we will:  

  • provide suitable and supportive supervision 

  • provide training appropriate to your role 

  • provide clear information about what is expected  

  • deliver relevant training and support  

  • ensure a safe environment where activities are within our services 

  • treat all parties with respect and without discrimination 

  • reimburse agreed out of pocket expenses 

  • recognise and appreciate the contribution of volunteers  

  • have appropriate policies regarding incident reporting, health and safety and processes to manage any breach

Under 16’s 

Northumberland County Council (NCC) do welcome young volunteers in appropriate roles.

Assistance for community groups 

If you are involved in a local community group or charity that needs a bit of advice and support, NCC teams may be able to help.   

Our teams have supported local groups by volunteering their time and skills to support with: 

  • community garden clearance 
  • website design 
  • business planning advice 
  • conservation
