Residents' Festival

also known as: Attractions, Castles, English Heritage, Festival, National Trust, Resident.

Over the festival weekend, Northumberland residents enjoyed free or discounted entry to many of the top attractions across the county including castles, gardens, stately homes and museums.

What is the Residents' Festival?

Over the festival weekend, Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 March 2013, Northumberland residents enjoyed free or discounted entry to 26 top attractions across the county including castles, gardens, stately homes and museums.

'Our people- our places' is organised by Northumberland County Council in partnership with leading visitor attractions and has become a firm favourite with local people.

Here is qhat some people have said about this years:

"I must say that I haven't seen Cragside as busy at this time of year as it was on Sunday, if the other properties were just as busy then the Residents Festival will have been a huge success and I hope it happens again." Bob Wilkinson

"Visited Leaplish bird of prey centre at Kielder on Sunday 17th March and witnessed this cheeky kite stealing the ladies wooley hat."

"In the walled garden at Wallington Hall. We had an excellent visit, took loads of photos and had an excellent lunch!" Bryony Stimpson

"Had a fantastic day with my twins that we couldn't afford to visit normally. So thank you very much." Kind regards, Sue Parker

Canon IXUS 125 HS digital camera competiton winner

Winner of the photo competition taken at Kirkley Hall Zoo This  picture, taken by Alison Ellerbrook  of Prudhoe,  really captured the attention of the judges of our Residents Festival  photo competition who awarded her the winning prize.

The two friendly donkeys belong to Kirkley Hall Zoological Gardens – one of the venues taking part in the 2013 Northumberland Residents Festival that offered local people free or discounted entry to a wide range of visitor attractions around the county over the festival weekend.

The council received over  200 fantastic photo entries capturing some stunning imagery of Northumberland  so it was really hard to choose a winner.

"The weather had a huge influence on the type of photographs that the weekend produced, with a lot of indoor shots being submitted from the visitors.” said Helen Smith, a photographer and one of the judges.

“ Landscapes were a challenge in most of Northumberland due to the lack influential light, but as you can see in the Residents Festival picture gallery, animals turned out to be an attractive subject for many photographers. It's not just about getting the furry little subjects in the frame it's about capturing that moment that makes the picture look just a little bit different. Our winning shot  summed up the whole weekend, the caption should read 'welcome to our zoo, we hope you enjoy your visit' it looks like they are posing for the picture. Mention should also be made to the many wonderful pictures taken at the Kielder Water Birds of Prey Centre."  She added

Alison will receive a canon digital camera for her winning entry.
