New Padel courts for popular raquet sport to open soon

Hexham is set to get one of the region’s first courts on which residents can play the increasingly popular tennis-like sport of padel.

The court will sit alongside existing tennis courts at Hexham Tennis Club.

Construction of the court has already started with an expected completion date of mid-October.

Often simplified as a mash-up of tennis and squash, padel is played with a perforated bat in an enclosed space which is less than half the size of a tennis court.

Northumberland County Council’s Sports Development Team have worked closely with Hexham Tennis Club to secure £91,000 funding from S106 Housing Developers Fund which combined with Club funding covered the cost of the court.

Padel originates from Mexico, is already big in Europe and is fast growing in the UK.

It's fun, easy to learn and the beauty is that mixed ages and abilities can play together.

Northumberland County Councillor Jeff Watson, Cabinet Member for Healthy Lives said:

“Padel is great for beginners and young children as well competent racquet sport players and is another fun and sociable way of keeping fit and active.

We’re delighted to see construction has started on what is only the third court in the North East.“

The court can be booked by both Hexham Tennis Club members and non-members.
Bookings open on Monday 7th October at https://playtomic.io
Court hire will be £16 peak and £14 off peak for an hour with 25% discount for Hexham Tennis club members.
