Resilience shines through during Storm Babet

Council teams have been working round the clock to ensure residents have been kept safe during Storm Babet.

Northumberland County Council has been working with partners and emergency services to ensure swift and effective response in flood-prone areas.

The storm, which brought heavy rainfall and strong winds late in the evening and overnight on Friday 20 October caused significant impacts in Rothbury, while high river levels were also seen in Morpeth and other parts of the county.

While we have seen the peak of the storm, water levels still remain high and we ask that people still take care and be vigilant when travelling around the county.

Please plan ahead, check for road closures and leave plenty of time for your journey. If travelling on foot please stay away from rivers, fords and coastal areas and be aware of footpaths or rights of way as heavy rain may have weakened footbridges and trees, so they could be dangerous.

Councillor Gordon Stewart, Cabinet Member for Looking After Our Communities with Northumberland County Council, said, “This has been a very powerful storm and I want to thank all our teams and all our colleagues from other agencies for their immense efforts in protecting our residents and keeping our communities safe.

“There has been real camaraderie amongst our residents. I’m always impressed with the resilience of our communities which never fail to come together during challenging times.

“We are not out of the woods yet and I would ask the public to remain vigilant and please be patient as we carry out our recovery operations.”
