Final phase of Cramlington roadworks to get underway

The final phase of works to construct a new roundabout in Cramlington are set to get underway on the week commencing May 8th.

The works are being carried out by a private contractor, Fred Mence Construction, on behalf of Bellway Homes and Persimmon Homes and are to fulfil the requirements of the planning permission for the housing developments at St Nicholas Manor adjacent to the A1171 Crow Hall Lane.

The works started last summer and throughout the scheme the Council has sought to work with the housing developers and contractors to try and minimise disruption while allowing the works to be carried out safely.

For the final phase of works, the north and south legs of the roundabout (Westmorland Way and Crowhall Lane) will be opened up to two-way traffic while work is done on the west and finally east legs of Station Road on the approaches to the roundabout.

The work on the west leg of the roundabout will be undertaken first, with Station Road to the west of the roundabout fully closed and traffic diverted round Nelson Drive and Crowhall Lane. This part is expected to last no more than six weeks.

The contractor’s work on Station Road to the west of the roundabout will be carried out in conjunction with the County Council’s own maintenance scheme while this length of road is closed to avoid further disruption at a later date.

The north, south and east legs of the roundabout (Crowhall Lane, Westmorland Way and Station Road east) will all be functioning while this west leg is closed.

Once the west leg is complete, the east Station Road leg of the roundabout will be closed to undertake the remaining works on this leg, with traffic diverted along Westmorland Way. The west leg of Station Road will be reopened, and the roundabout will work with the north, south and west legs (Crowhall Lane, Westmorland Way and Station Road west) in operation.  It is expected that this part will take no more than two or three weeks.

The contractors will then complete the final surfacing and road lining over a number of days and discussions are ongoing about traffic management for this last piece of work.

Once this final resurfacing is complete all the roads will be opened and the scheme finished.
