New toilet facilities open in Hexham

The county’s latest public toilet refurbishments are complete.

Newly refurbished facilities at St Mary’s Wynd in Hexham have now opened. The toilets, which have been closed for several years, have undergone a complete overhaul.

The facilities now have baby changing in both the female and male sides and the disabled unit has been brought up to the latest standards.
The work was timed so it could be completed ahead of the main tourist season.

The improvements are part of a wider £1.35m three-year programme of works to improve the standard of all of the 54 public toilets in the county for which the council has responsibility.

Councillor John Riddle, Cabinet Member for Local services at Northumberland County Council, said: “We continue to invest in our public toilets at a time when many councils are closing them.

“Hexham is a busy market town, attracting not just locals but thousands of visitors every year. It’s only right we have high standard, modern facilities in the county and this is just the latest in our three-year programme of works.”

Hexham Central with Acomb County Councillor Trevor Cessford said: “I’m delighted that my constant lobbying of the County Council ever since these toilets were originally closed has eventually come to fruition.

"Looking at them now they look absolutely top notch and a great addition for our wonderful market town. I have already spoken to the relevant people to have the signage to the toilets brought up to date.”
