New mobile mast to improve connectivity in Northumberland coastal village

Funding has been approved for the installation of a new mast in one of Northumberland’s busiest coastal villages.

Residents and businesses in Craster which have previously experienced patchy, or no reception, will soon be able tobenefit from improved mobile coverage in the area.

Over 200 homes and businesses in the village, as well as 250,000 visitors, will be able to stay better connected with friends, family, colleagues, and businesses with minimum disruption when making calls or browsing online

Cllr Richard Wearmouth, deputy leader of Northumberland County Council and portfolio holder for corporate services said: “It is great to see plans for better rural connectivity starting to take shape.

Mobile masts provide a much-needed service, and it is important to ensure that they are installed in locations where there is minimal impact on the local environment.”

The new mast is set to be erected in the council-owned car park in the village once planning permission has been sought.

Cllr Wearmouth continued: “This is just the first step in our ambition to roll out more efficient mobile and broadband technology in our hardest to reach areas.

I look forward to seeing the benefits this will bring, not only for our residents and local businesses who will see the biggest changes but also for the thousands of visitors who come to Craster as a fantastic tourist destination.”

Local Cllr Wendy Pattison said: “I am absolutely delighted that the residents of Craster will now have access to a mobile phone signal which has been so long awaited.

This wonderful initiative has been achieved by Northumberland County Council and the Telecoms Company, Railsite, working collaboratively.
This is a real cause for community celebration and will be so beneficial for the people and community of Craster.”
