A firework display, The Fire Service said it was a quieter Bonfire Night this year

Communities thanked after quieter Bonfire Night

Firefighters across Northumberland have thanked residents after a quieter than usual Bonfire Night

With the control room handling 58 calls, crews attended 39 incidents on the night, that compares to last year where Fire Control took 101 calls and crews dealt with 60 incidents.

Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service Chief Fire Officer Paul Hedley said: “November 5th is generally our busiest night of the year, and we had well-rehearsed plans in place to deal with the anticipated increases in calls and incidents.

“But thanks to our preparedness, the work we’ve done in the run-up with our partners to educate people on the dangers of fireworks and irresponsible fire lighting, numbers were well down on previous years.

"I’d also like to thank all those residents who sensibly enjoyed the occasion and praise local organisations who laid on organised events – which are always the best way of enjoying a safe Fireworks Night.”
