Would you like to work in a career to be proud of?

Adult social care is not just a rewarding career where people can make a difference every day, it can offer flexible hours and the chance to work locally in your local community.

Northumberland County Council has joined up with independent sector providers to host social care recruitment events across the county for people to find out more about the roles available in their area and talk to people who already work in the sector.

The team will be in Hexham from Tuesday 3 May to Saturday 7 May, from 10am to 4pm, at Queen's Hall in Hexham; and from 10am to 4pm, at Hexham Leisure Centre on Thursday, May 5 and Friday, May 6.

Cllr Wendy Pattison, cabinet member for adults' wellbeing said:If you are a caring person who likes working with people, we’d love to hear from you.

“Working in social care is a rewarding career which also gives you the opportunity to work close to home. There will be different shift patterns available depending on the role and the organisation you work for, and most providers will be willing to discuss your individual circumstances. There are also opportunities to work part time or at weekends if that suits you better.

“We have more than 50 different organisations providing care across the county so there are many different options and locations to choose from.

Short Term Support Service manager Cerrie Dewison began her career in home care as a care worker in 2001. Her son was only a year old at the time, so she needed to work part-time. Initially she only worked weekends so she could look after her son during the week.

Cerrie said: “It fitted in very well with my life at the time because my son was only little and it was easy for me to look after him.I love working with people, especially elderly people, and I enjoyed it so much. I went to the same people every weekend and built up a lovely rapport with them.

As Cerrie’s son got older, she was able to work three-days a week and in 2005 she took on a new role as a local coordinator. In 2008 she was promoted to team supervisor, deputy manager in 2016 and service manager in 2020.

Cerrie said: “This is definitely a career where you can work flexibly and still progress. If you think it could suit you I’d encourage you to come along to the events and find out more.”
