Northumberland’s children set for 10 minute shake up

Following the success of previous years, Northumberland County Council is again supporting the 10 Minute Shake Up campaign, where schoolchildren across the county will be inspired to get physically active this summer.

New 10 Minute Shake Ups, featuring a host of popular Disney characters from the hit films Frozen, Lightyear, Marvel, and Encanto, will get children moving and count towards the 60 active minutes they need every day.  It is hoped this will then encourage participation in other physical activities and sports.

Liz Morgan, Director of Public Health at Northumberland County Council, said: “Good health habits are best started when young.

“We know childhood obesity is a significant problem, especially in the most deprived areas, where children are more than twice as likely to be obese. We have seen a worryingly steep increase in the proportion of children who are overweight or obese since the start of the pandemic, so we know focusing on and trying to address the issue at an early age is crucial.

“Nutrition plays a key role in a person's weight but being physically active plays a vital part in the wider health picture and is still extremely important. The Chief Medical Officer recommends children have at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day, and the 10 Minute Shake Up games are a great start to being more physically active.“

Northumberland County Councillor Guy Renner-Thompson, cabinet member for Childrens Services, said: “Physical activity is really important for everyone but especially for our young people. Children should aim to take at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity each day, but we know many are not reaching this target.

“This is a fantastic, fun way to encourage young people to get active. Physical activity helps children and young people become more confident and resilient, and they will actually live longer. “
