Learning, Celebrating, and Supporting this LGBT+ History Month

The council is supporting residents and staff in celebrating LGBT+ communities and culture this LGBT+ History Month.

LGBT+ History Month takes place between 1 – 28 February and is the annual celebration of diversity, equality and the LGBT+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender +) community.

Founded by ‘Schools OUT UK’, the month aims to increase the visibility of LGBT+ people and their experiences, in educational settings and the wider community.

Equality, diversity and inclusion matter greatly to the council, in the provision of services and in its role as an employer and local authority.

In support of this national month, the council is looking to address three main topics, including: Learning More About Our Communities, Celebrating Through Art, and Mental Health & Wellbeing.

Each topic aims to increase awareness and visibility around the LGBT+ community and affect positive change toward greater inclusivity within the county.

Activity for each week and details of how to get involved will be available across the council’s social media platforms throughout the month.

Equality and Diversity Lead for Northumberland County Council Patrick Price said: “Learning more about others, celebrating LGBT+ talent and culture, and supporting LGBT+ people are some of the key ways in which we can make our communities more inclusive and safer for all.

“The council is keen to improve equality and diversity across the county and have recently consulted on our Equality Objectives for 2021-2025. Read a summary report here.

Cllr Wendy Pattison, cabinet member for Adults Wellbeing, said: “As a council, we believe that fair treatment and equality for all our residents is of the utmost importance.

“We also strive to ensure that our staff are fully supported, and our fantastic LGBT+ Staff Network Group plays a huge part in supporting LGBT+ staff members and affecting change.”
