Walking netball classes start in Northumberland

If you are interested in playing netball but find the pace a little too much, then walking netball classes could be for you.

Following on from the popularity of the sport during The Commonweath Games, Active Northumberland has teamed up with England Netball to lay on new classes at its sports centres in Morpeth, Alnwick, Hexham and Ponteland.

Walking Netball is a slower paced version of the game and as the name suggests,  it is netball, but at a walking pace. The game has been designed so that anyone can play it regardless of age or fitness level.

Mark Warnes, chief executive of Active Northumberland said:
“Netball is a game that so many people played when they were younger, and their memories and love of the game remain.
“Walking Netball is a great way to re-kindle their enjoyment of this team sport. Our sessions promise to be fun and friendly with a focus on having a good time and meeting new people whilst keeping active.”

Jessica Laidler, Netball Development Officer from England Netball said:
“Netball was particularly popular during The Commonwealth Games and has created a renewed interest in the game.
“We’re teaming up with Active Northumberland to lay on walking netball sessions which are inclusive and suitable for all ages.

“It is a slower version of the game we all love. There are a few rule adaptions which help take the impact out of the activity but fundamentally it is Walking Netball”

The sessions cost £4 per week.. There is no need to book. Those wishing to take part can just turn up at the centre wearing comfortable clothing and trainers.

The classes are running at the following centres:
Willowburn Sports & Leisure Centre, Alnwick - Wednesdays 2:30 pm - 3:30pm
Riverside Leisure Centre, Morpeth - Tuesdays 1 - 2pm
Ponteland Sports & Leisure Centre - Friday 1:30pm - 2:30pm
Wentworth Leisure Centre, Hexham - Wednesday 1 - 2pm. This class will move to Thursdays 1 - 2pm from September.
