Award winning author Nick Arnold took families on a journey of discovery, delving into the horrible side of science at his show at the East Bedlington Community Centre.

The sold-out event saw families from across Northumberland getting up-close with Shocking Electricity, Nasty Nature, Fatal forces and more in this fun, and fact filled, interactive show.

This was the first event of its kind to be held at the new Bedlington Station Library location and   just one of several free events organised by Northumberland Libraries as part of the Gadgeteers Summer Reading Challenge, which aims to get youngsters excited about books, reading and STEM subjects.

Over 2,000 children in Northumberland have signed up for the challenge, making this a bumper holiday for reading.

Councillor Jeff Watson, Cabinet Member responsible for libraries, said: “We are delighted with the response to the Summer Reading Challenge and the Horrible Science event.

“Libraries at the heart of our communities can help shape the future of our county, which is why it is so important that we are able to provide opportunities for children to meet authors and learn about STEM subjects in engaging ways.”

Speaking about the influence libraries have on shaping the future of STEM subjects, Nick Arnold said: “For many children, libraries are their only and best access to books and it's important that there are exciting and engaging science books for children to spark their interest at an early age. Once a child is interested in science, they may develop that interest and go all the way to university to become scientists themselves.

“Every Saturday I used to go to my local library or book shop and look at books. I am very proud of the fact that I gets lots of emails from people all over the world who are now scientists, doctors, nurses or even science teachers, who say that they wouldn't be in their present role if it wasn't for my books.”

As well East Bedlington Community Centre, libraries are finding new homes in community hubs across Northumberland. Library sites can now be found at the Hub at Cramlington, the Hub at Haltwhistle and Newbiggin Sports and Community Hub which opens its doors on 7 September.
