Northumberland welcomes the Tour of Britain

Northumberland will be welcoming back world-class cyclists on 10 September as the Tour of Britain returns to the county.

The race was rescheduled in 2020 due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic making 2021 the 17th edition of the prestigious stage race taking place over seven days (Sunday 5-12 September).

Stage Six will be starting in Carlisle, entering Northumberland just south of the former mining village of Allenheads and continuing east to Prudhoe. Approximately 64km of the 200km stage will be taking place in the county and will feature an exciting sprint before leaving the county and continuing onto Gateshead where the stage will finish in the shadows of the Angel of the North.

Glen Sanderson, Leader of Northumberland County Council, said: “I think it’s really great that we are moving out of the shadows of COVID and seeing life coming back to normal and It’s absolutely fantastic news that the Tour of Britain cycle race is coming back to Northumberland this September.

“There are lots of very exciting road stages, it will be great to watch, it will be great for local businesses, and it will raise our profile even more as the best county in Britain."

In recent years Northumberland hosted Stage Three of the race back in 2019 and Stages Four and Five over two days in 2015.

The events have attracted thousands of spectators and provided a big boost to the county’s economy.

The race will go ahead subject to local conditions and in line with relevant national guidelines and UCI protocols. Further details can be found here: www.tourofbritain.co.uk
